I founded Short Story Radio in 2006, with the aim of promoting the short story form and English speaking short story writers to an international audience. The stories are listened to by thousands of people a month, from all over the world.
Short Story Radio forged links with many literary organisations and writers. It has broadcast work by emerging writers from The Writers’ Centre, Norwich and Mslexia magazine, as well as new works by bestselling authors Sue Gee, Sophie King and Sue Moorcroft, and television scriptwriters John Finch and Alan Coleman.
The stories have also been heard on many radio stations around the UK, including Insight Radio, the radio station of the Royal National Institute of the Blind.
In June 2009 Short Story Radio was awarded funding by Arts Council England to record a series of short stories for the website and podcast. This support from Arts Council England provided a rare career opportunity for over twenty writers and actors.
Although the website is no longer updated, a selection of stories are still available to download. The success of Short Story Radio led to the idea for The Story Player, which has a wider remit than Short Story Radio, and will be developed further in 2015.
